Oh. My. Fucking. God.

(Via Feministing.)

Okay, the virginity craze has officially gone too far. For just $14.90 you can buy an artificial hymen.

Let me say that again: artificial hymen.
"No more worry about losing your virginity. With this product, you can have your
first night back anytime. Insert this artificial hymen into your vagina
carefully. It will expand a little and make you feel tight. When your lover
penetrate, it will ooze out a liquid that look like blood not too much but just
the right amount. Add in a few moans and groans, you will pass through
undetectable. Its easy to use, clinically proven non-toxic to human and has no
side effects, no pain to use and no allergic reaction."

Never mind the grammatical errors, this product allows a woman to fake being a virgin... with tightness and a tiny bit of blood. I don't think I can use words accurately enough to describe how disgusted I am at this. It's just too much.

Now sure, vagina-plasty to "repair" the hymen so a woman is effectively a virgin again is a horrible thing imposed by a culture that is obsessed for some god-awful reason with the almight hymen -- but the cost is just slightly prohibitive. So, why shouldn't there be a product that, for under $15 freaking dollars establishes the exact same principle? Then everyone can have their hymens back! No. Omg, ew. No. This is too much.

WHY?!

I wouldn't have thought it could be that convincing. Maybe it's for sexual role-playing in which case it's pretty harmless as long as it's as safe as it claims.

If it's for real then I'm in two minds. In America, Europe and Canada, anyone who can't cope with not being their partners one and only should just get the hell over it. In some parts of China (where it's apparently shipped from) and plenty of other countries it could quite literally be a lifesaver for a lot of desperate young women. Yes the culture definitely needs to change but I wouldn't condemn a girl facing a possible "honour" killing for seeking cover.

No, I wouldn't either. I'm not necessarily condemning the people who use it -- or the people who get vaginaplasty to repair their hymens in order to avoid so-called "honor" killings, or other "honor" activities that are perpetrated against women in cultures the world over.

I am, however, loudly condemning the culture that makes this disgusting this possible and necessary. So much of so many cultures are so fucking obsessed the the hymen as a means of telling whether a woman has ever been "sullied by the hand of a man" (or other body parts), and it's this cross-cultural obsession with the hymen that damages women (although, I'm sure you already knew that). This artificial hymen is a symptom of that obsession and its blatancy disgusts me.
